This small old house was once one an important way station along the Underground Railroad for thousands of runaway slaves, today you can tour the cellar and stand where slaves hid on their journey to freedom.

This house was built in 1849 by German immigrant Jacob Burkle and served as one of Memphis' most important stations along the Underground Railroad. Here you can experience the secret cellars and trap doors which provided an escape route for runaway slaves. This site also has a large collection of slavery related artifacts including ads, auction materials, and other items which tell the story of slavery and the Underground Railroad. The Slave Haven/Burkle Estate provides a real life atmosphere where you can learn about this important yet dangerous time in American History.
