The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, also known as the New Cooper River Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River in South Carolina, connecting downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant. The 8 lanes of the feature satisfied the capacity of U.S. Route 17 when it was put in commission in 2005 to supplant two obsolete cantilever truss bridges. The bridge has a main span of 1,546 ft, the 3rd most lengthy among cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. It was built using the design-building technique and was the brainchild of Parsons Brinckerhoff. This fascinating piece of architecture history is a must-see and remains as one of the more imposing structures in the area.
