We’ve all heard of Charleston’s illustrious history, which we are proud of. But many people don’t know that beer has played a large part in our town since the early 1800s. And today, it remains an integral part of the culture in downtown Charleston. Not only did early Charlestonians rely on the beer they brewed at home, but they also enjoyed the system of breweries that once flourished in this town. An 1866 letter from a Charleston brewery to its patrons detailed some of the stops on their tour, which included “the finest hotel in the South” and “a first-class restaurant, where we can always enjoy more than our money’s worth.” Dating back to the 1700s, food, and libations were often staples of socialization for wealthy Americans, especially in Charleston. The city had around 34 breweries during its heyday (1860-1920) and was home to 33 different beers during that period.
