A visit to Charleston is not complete without a stroll around this historic, haunted city targeting its many spooky spots, from St. Michael's Church to the Battery area with both traditional pirate haunts and more modern ghost stories. Ghosts of Charleston Ghost Hunting Trip:Ghosts and Pirates Guided Walking Tour Charleston is the setting for the wildly popular haunted carriage tours, though Charleston ghost tours are usually conducted on foot as well. These include a wide range of paranormal investigations of cemeteries, homes, plantations, and other historical sites in the dense, compact downtown area. The most famous haunted house in Charleston is located at 7 Montague Lane in the city's French Quarter. It was once home to Charles Pinckney (1757-1824) who drafted South Carolina's "Declaration of Independence" at age 25. In fact, several former governors resided there until 1822 when it became a private residence.

Ghost tours can make for an excellent evening activity during your stay in Charleston which will help you understand more about what happened during these dark times. This list provides a brief glimpse into some of the eerie happenings that occurred throughout this period as they are told by locals and historians. To start, the history is truly haunting. Charleston was founded in 1670. The city was named after its founder, Charles Towneley. [1] Charleston strongly rebelled against the British and refused to give up their freedom. They weren't able to hold their rebel thoughts down and were even forced to banish all Blacks from the city in 1720 [1]. This started a war that would continue for six years: the "Vesey Rebellion". Not only did it heavily affect Charleston's economy, but they experienced slave uprisings as well [2]. After this war ended, Charleston began to rebuild.
