The museum is inside the historic Lone Star Brewery building, which was refurbished for this purpose. Them museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and closed on Mondays. It has extended hours on Tuesday and Friday. It is along the northern section of the famous San Antonio River Walk.
The museum began with art from the Americas, including pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial. Beginning in 1985 Latin American Folk Art was added. The museum grew fast in the 1990s, adding a large collection of Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. Chinese ceramics and other Asian art were added later as it grew to 15,000 square feet. It now holds the largest collection of Asian art in the south.
The museum has about 30,000 works of art from all over the world and covering thousands of years. It also lends collections to other museums. in addition to its large collection, there are rotating special exhibits throughout the year. One example was a collection of Portuguese and Spanish Colonial Art that was at the museum for awhile. Special programs of educational art are also put on at various times through they year.
The museum has special group tours available for early childhood, high schools and college groups, as well as adult groups. Tours by groups must be scheduled in advance. Photography is limited but allowed in some situations. Non flash photos may be taken except in special exhibit areas. There is a cafe as well as a gift shop.
