McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, TX

With a collection encompassing such a wide variety of art there is something for everyone to enjoy. Located about 5 miles from downtown this museum is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon.

The McNay Collection began with about 700 works and has currently grown to almost 20,000 works of art. The museum houses collections including Medieval and Renaissance art, and 19th- through 21st- century European and American art. There is also an impressive collection of prints and drawings and unique collection of theater art pieces. The McNay also has a collection of beautiful art glass, and stunning art of New Mexico. The beautiful grounds of the museum are as wonderful as the art housed within. The beautiful architecture, Japanese garden and fountains charm guests as they enter.

Marion Koogler McNay began her art collection in 1927. On her death Marion left her art collection, Spanish Colonial-Revival home, and an endowment to create a museum of modern art. The McNay opened in 1954 and has since added an additional 45,000 square feet to the original house.

The McNay does not allow food or drinks in the museum, but guests can picnic in designated areas. The McNay offers free parking to their guests. There are several nearby restaurants including Baskin-Robbins, Twin Sisters Bakery and Cafe and Flair. Nearby hotels include Rodeway Inn near Ft Sam Houtson, and Crowne Plaza San Antonio Airport.
