Artpace in San Antonio

445 N Main Ave San Antonio, TX 78205
Artpace is a combination of an art lab and a community center regarded as San Antonio’s most contemporary space.

Artpace sits in an industrial space that used to be the dealership of a Hudson automobile. The large space is an ideal setting for its vast program and community events; which means there is always something uniquely eccentric being held by creative every so often. In 1995, Artpace was founded by the late Linda Pace. She was an artist and philanthropist.

Artpace conducts an International Artist-In-Residence program where an artist from Texas, another from any part of the United States and the third from anywhere else in the world converge at Artpace to come up with a new piece of art. The work takes 4 months in residence. This program hosts nine artists every year. The artists are selected by a guest curator. While in residency, they live and work at Artpace.

Alongside residency, Artpace conducts exhibition for contemporary works of art and in large part carries out community education and outreach. There are several families and kid-friendly festivals such as the Chalk It Up fest in October where artists and other interested parties make chalk drawings on the downtown sidewalks, and the Annual Family Day organized in the spring. The Artpace also holds lectures, screening of film series and lots of other social events such as concerts on its rooftop section and potlucks.

San Antonio’s Artpace is an ideal stop for the eccentric contemporary artists and creative inspired by all art forms. Art enthusiasts can experience a different kind of art that reflects the dynamics of the times we live in. You can also visit just to socialize during one of the many events held at the rooftop.
