About the Outdoor Drama Show

Published in 1907, The Shepherd of the Hills tells the story of life in the rugged Ozarks in the late 1800s. As the play begins, you see the cast stressfully talking about how they may lose their homes after the drought has ruined their crops. They try to joke and lighten the mood but they all know what is coming. The opening scene sets the tone for the whole play; these people have a rough life. Throughout the rest of the play, you'll meet interesting characters and grow to love and hate them.

The drama's first season began in 1959 and has since brought millions of Branson visitors to the outdoor stage. Considered to be the 'story of the Ozarks', in both a spiritual and materialistic sense, this show captures the spirit of the past Ozark ancestors' spirit in this beautiful outdoor production.
