About the Museum

Step inside the museum and get ready to explore decades of history! With admission, visitors will be able to embark upon a fun, self-guided tour of the museum and everything that it has to offer. At the heart of the museum is the state's natural heritage, so visitors will be able to learn about the true Virginia. A variety of unique native animals call the museum home, and visitors will enjoy being able to learn all about the native animals, ecosystem, and history that makes this state so unique. 

The Exhibits

Experience the geography, history, and ecosystems of Virginia with an array of exhibitions. These exhibits are included with your admission ticket, and you can explore them to your heart's content. 

• Appalachian Cove and Cypress Swamp
  

  Explore the Appalachians at this indoor exhibit! This exhibit features a waterfall, mountain fish, native plants, and wetland creatures. See cypress and tupelo tree trunks, alligators, fish, turtles, and more!
   

• How Life Survives: Discover Center
  

  Get a hands-on experience as you interact with plenty of unique specimens from life science, geology, and space science! 

• Wild and Well
  

  Kiddos will have a blast at the Wild and Well Exhibit, an interactive play station which allows little guests to transform into animal keepers and veterinarians. Learn about animal health and have a fun time learning about the museum's bobcat, Sarge, while learning how to take care of native wild animals.

• Outdoor Boardwalk Trail
  

  Get some fresh air at this aspect of the museum! On the boardwalk trail, visitors will be able to see Deer Park Lake, wooded areas, a wetlands area, and plenty of other amazing creatures. Guests will also be able to see native red wolves, beavers, river otter, red foxes, coyote, and so much more. 

• Dinosaur Discovery Trail
  

  Then, head back to prehistoric times to discover the wonders of the Dinosaur Discovery Trail! This exhibit opened in 2016, and has since been a popular permanent display. It features 16 realistic dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. See the barchiosaurus, a baby T. rex, and so much more! Guests can also enjoy the fun of a dig pit, fossil displays, and a real whale specimen. 

• Living Green House
  

  For plant lovers, there is no cooler place than this Living Green House! This exhibit teaches guests how to build and maintain earth-friendly homes, produce less waste, and use less energy. It is the only museum of its kind in the US! 

• Butterfly Haven
  

  Escape outside to witness the world of butterflies at this exhibit. During the summer months, visitors can explore the Butterfly Haven, a colorful atrium filled with butterflies including Monarchs. 

• Holt Native Plant Conservatory
  

  Learn about Virginia's native plants and how to preserve them at this beautiful conservatory. The conservatory features more than 830 square feet of propagation space and is used to grow the native plants for the museum's exhibits.

• Abbitt Planetarium and Observatory
  

  See an incredible film at the planetarium's theater which brings a fully digital simulation of the sky to guests of all ages! Guests can see the sky as seen from anywhere on Earth from 99,999 BC to 99,999 AD. There are also various laser performances and shows held here. 

• Wild Care Center
  

  Learn about animal husbandry and veterinary care at this extensive exhibit. Guests will watch as vets complete check-ups, prepare meals, and learn about the animals that call the museum home.
