On the hunt for another piece of American history? You'll want to include a visit to the award-winning Shipwreck Coast Museum with your stay on Mackinac Island. Like Mackinac, the 150-year-old lighthouse that stands next to the museum and was built by the order of President Abraham Lincoln still works and is a throwback to days gone by. The museum recollects the key maritime trade that occurred on the Great Lakes with several exhibits, including one focused on the famous SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The theater has a short film that explores the wreckage of the Edmund Fitzgerald deep at the bottom of Lake Superior. The short trip to see this museum is well worth it and will historically enrich your vacation to Mackinac Island.
