The Mamoth Site was the highlight of our two week roadtrip from California to Denver. This is the real deal! You actually walk through the area with real fossils from 140,000 years ago! The dig is active and the commentary QR codes were fascinating. We spent over an hour but would have gone back the next day if we didn't have a plane to catch. Uncrowded and we'd highly recommend the little town of Hot Springs.XYZRebecca Peterson - Fishers, IN

Take a 30-minute guided tour, see the remains of over 60 mammoths, walk along the edges of a sinkhole, and see endless life-life displays of various creatures from the Ice Age. Children will have the opportunity to have hands-on experiences and you can watch the scientists conducting their research through a glass wall!

In 1974, a heavy equipment operator was leveling ground for a new housing development site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The crew got more than they bargained for with their excavating; not only did they find dirt, but they found mysterious bones. Experts were brought in to look at the bones and they began to excavate on a more archeological level. Tusks, teeth, and skull fragments were found and it was then realized that this 14-acre area was a mammoth graveyard. By the end of 1975's summer excavation, the area was made into the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD.

Today, this museum is the only late Ice Age facility of its kind in North America! Research is still done at the site and it helps to educate the entire world on paleontology and extinct animals. It's a great place to go if you love history, the natural world, or if you want to immerse your children into the world of science. Add this to your trip

"one of the highlights of our trip."
We had no idea what to expect when i signed up for this adventure. Adventure it was! We consider it one of the highlights of our trip. I sorry that i can't remember the young lady's name, who was our guide, but she was awesome! So knowledgeable, personable, and entertaining. We had heard a few people comment about the site but never dreamed that it would be so fantastic. We'll be recommending this site as well.
