Gallier House in New Orleans, LA is located on Royal Street within the
French Quarter and is quite a popular attraction for walking tours and even the occasional ghost tour. Built in 1857, it was a residence for James Gallier Jr., an Irishman with his head clearly in the future. He was forward-thinking in his architectural designs and it is because of this that the home is one of the best small museums in the country.
The docents at Gallier House are well-versed in the home's history and make it come alive with various stories. If you are found of Victorian style furnishings and enamored with the old custom of dressing homes according to the season, you will find this town house to be a rare jewel. The outside of the Gallier House may strike a feeling of déjà vu with Anne Rice fans as she used elements of it to describe her characters' home.
Gallier House had an indoor working bathroom as well as an indoor kitchen, something unheard of in the era. The millwork and other wood projects in the home are exquisitely detailed with fine craftsmanship. The décor is strictly Victorian with plenty of damask, cornices and more. If you should happen to visit during the holiday season, you are in for quite a treat with the 19th century decorations with a Creole influence.
