Lower East Side in New York City, NY Return to Points of Interest Although the Lower East Side has historically been noted as the primary home of Jewish immigrants in New York City, it has over the years become a melting pot of culture. Japanese, Latin Americans, Poles, Ukrainians and immigrants from various Muslim countries all live with the Jewish population in today's Lower East Side. This cultural variety offers visitors a great way to experience a wide range of dining, shopping and sightseeing opportunities. From sushi bars and specialty food stores to synagogues and Hare Krishna Temples, this area definitely adds a distinct world view to New York City. Aside from various immigrants, the area has also been home to counter-culture, radical and revolutionary movements throughout the years. Throughout much of the twentieth century notable figures such as Allen Ginsberg and Abbie Hoffman have made the Lower East Side their home.
