Notable Moments in Virginia Beach History:

  • 1607- Jamestown colonists make their first landing at Cape Henry-which is the northeastern part of Virginia Beach.
  • 1634- The King of England ordered the formation of Elizabeth City Shire- which included land of modern-day Virginia Beach.
  • 1636- The Elizabeth City Shire was further divided into counties- New Norfolk County was the area of Virginia Beach.
  • 1637- Lower Norfolk County was created to further subdivide the county
  • 1691- Lower Norfolk County was divided into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County.  Princess Anne County included the area of modern day Virginia Beach.
  • 1883-The first hotel in Virginia Beach was built.
  • 1889- Rail and electricity arrive in the area, and the resort area of Virginia Beach started to grow.
  • 1906- Virginia Beach was incorporated as a town.
  • 1952- Virginia Beach incorporated as a city in Princess Anne County.
  • 1963- To prevent annexation of Princess Anne County to Norfolk County, the Virginia General Assembly approved Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach to be incorporated into one political subdivision.  It was named the City of Virginia Beach.
  • 1970s and 1980s- Virginia Beach becomes a popular tourist location for families, as well as becoming known for its Spring Break activities. 
  • 1989- Hundreds of college students become intoxicated and riot in Virginia Beach over Labor Day weekend, causing the greatest civil disturbance in the area's history, and resulting in nearly 500 arrests.
