Nauticus & Battleship Wisconsin Photos (12)

During your Virginia vacation, be sure to visit the Nauticus & Battleship Wisconsin!

As you look upon the Battleship Wisconsin, you will immediately sense its incredible command. Large guns, a sleek profile, and a loaded superstructure contribute to the ships massive power.

From World War I to World War II battleships dominated the seas and the ships in the U.S. Navy have served with distinction. As you stand on the teak deck you will appreciate the history of the 887-foot ship that was once home to several thousand soldiers. Even though the ship's interior areas are closed to the public, guests can look through portholes to see the officer's mess, or dining area, as well as a senior officer's stateroom. Dominating the main deck of the ship are 16-inch-long guns with a history of firing shells that each weighed 2,700 pounds! that dominate the main deck. These gun turrets were capable of rotating around giving all nine guns the ability to fire a full broadside to ranges up to 23 nautical miles.

Hands-on exhibits covering the period from the late 1800's to present day are available for the public as well as an audio tour of the battleship. Guests will have the opportunity to design a ship, and even help uncover the remains of the Civil War-era USS Monitor! Make a vacation out of it and find other fun things to do in the area!
