No matter how many times you may have been to Torch Lake, the pure beauty of it all can be hypnotic.
It's Michigan's second biggest lake and many call it the state's "crown jewel" for that reason. Located less than 20 miles from Torch Lake is Traverse City, which has easy access to the Cherry Capital Airport.
With all the outdoor activities available in Torch Lake and the surrounding area, there will be something for every member of your group to enjoy. Boating, swimming, hunting, and fishing are just the beginning. You never know what treasure you may find in any one of its quaint little shops. When you're ready for food there, is a restaurant in town that you can go right up to in a boat and enjoy a meal on the deck.
Torch Lake was named for the way Ojibwa Native Americans fished there. The Ojibwa name for the lake is Was-wa-gon-ong which translates to "Place of the Torches." By using the light of torches to attract fish, they were able to harvest fish with nets and spears. Imagine fishing at night on that beautiful lake by the light of a torch!
Of course, not everyone comes to Torch Lake for the water sports, interesting shops, or the excellent food its restaurants offer. Some come just for the chance to soak up the peace and serenity by just looking around.
