The Popeye Character Trail is located in Chester, Illinois, which is just south of St.
Louis, Missouri. The trail contains granite statues of all the beloved Popeye characters. This continues to be a work in progress as a new statue is added each year. The characters are spread out all over the city.
Popeye was the first statue created in the trail in 1977. He overlooks Segar Park. However, the next statue, Wimpy, was not added until 2006 and he was placed next to the Popeye Museum. In 2007, Olive Oyl, Swee’Pea and Eugene the Jeep statue was added and placed at the Randolph County Courthouse. The trend to add a new statue each year has continued since then.
Chester, IL is the home of Popeye creator Elzie Crigler Segar. It is believed that Segar modeled Popeye after a local townsman by the name of Frank “Rocky” Fiegel. Fiegel was the town bachelor who was known to have been very creative with his fists. It is said that Fiegel received regular checks from Segar until he passed away in 1938.
This trail is a must see for any Popeye fan. Trail maps are available and the Popeye Museum is a must-see while visiting Chester. Other attractions located in the area include the Kaskaskia Bell and the Piney Creek Ravine. Make sure to stop in at Sweet Peas for some ice cream and to check out their Popeye themed decor as well!
