This cave has a lot of history behind it. When the cave was first discovered, it was used as housing for the local Indian tribes. During the era of the Underground Railroad, this cave was used as place for the slaves to hide. Speculation also has it that Jesse James and his gang used this cave to hide on many occasions. There is also an area of this cave where they used to hold ballroom dances over 100 years ago. The inside of the cave was nice and cool making it the perfect location for dances on those hot evenings. This part of the cave is still available today for rent for meetings, receptions or other special events.
The cave is said to have some of the rarest and biggest cave formations in the world. There are many levels in the cave, with some of them not being available as part of the tour. However, you can still get a good view of them, so bring a camera. Tours of Meramec Cavern are given every 20 to 30 minutes, so if you miss a tour, don't fret. There are plenty of things in the gift shop for you to browse through while you're waiting. When you're finished with the tour, you'll get to see a light show in the cavern. At times, it does get very dark and very cold in the cave, do dress warm and enjoy the sites.

Admission is only $12.50 for adults and $6 for children aged 5-11. You'll find that it's well worth the price. Strollers and baby buggies are not allowed in the cave, so you may not want to bring young children. Any children that do come should enjoy walking because there is a lot of walking in the tour. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
