The Potter's Wax Museum is the brainchild of George L. Potter. Mr. Potter traveled to London as a young boy and was quickly smitten with the life like statues of historical figures that he saw on his journey. He quickly decided that he too wanted to create a display in America of important figures so life like that you will do a double take and thus the idea for the Potter's Wax Museum began to take fruition. After finding the most talented and creative artists throughout Europe and importing the best wax from France and the finest hair directly from Italy, production for Potter's wax figures began in Belgium allowing the museum to open its doors in 1949.
The next time you are in St. Augustine's make sure Potter's Wax Museum is on your list of must do attractions and stop on by. The museum is open daily from 9:00 A.M - 6:00 P.M. except for Christmas Day when it is closed for the holiday. This is a one of a kind attraction that you do not want to miss! And remember, Princess Diana and all her beauty in a splendid dress, Michael Jordan dressed and ready for a big game and Harry Potter ready to perform some magic are all waiting for you!
The inspiration behind Potter's Wax Museum came from a childhood trip to London taken by founder, George L. Potter. As a child, he was mesmerized by the life like figures and wanted to share his enjoyment with the American public.
In 1947, Potter began contracting with GEMS of London, a noted wax studio, to create one of a kind figures for his museum. Potter employed artists from all over Europe to aide in this project with the wax imported from France, hair from Italy, and the sculpting taking place in Belgium. Opening it's doors in 1949, Potter's Wax Museum has served as an interactive, educational and fun attraction for visitors to the ancient city.
At Potter's, you can interact with historic figures such as, Ponce de Leon, Albert Einstein, and Princess Diana, take a picture with Michael Jordon or Angelina Jolie; or imagine you are on set with Harry Potter and 'He Who Must Not Be Named.'
