The Verde Canyon Railroad is a short, scenic railroad between Clarkdale and Perkinsville, Arizona. The train runs on a grade up to 2.6% in the steepest section with curves of 25 degrees radius and angles of 40-45 degrees (1 in 20). Its rolling stock consists of two coal-fired steam locomotives. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1891 and 1906, respectively, they are the oldest operating steam locomotives in service anywhere in the US today. For a short time in 1907, they were the only ones in operation. The first locomotive, "Celerity," is a Western Railway #3, and the second is Elkhorn #6, from 1915.
The railroad operates freight and passenger train rides throughout the summer, with scheduled departures at 8 am and 12:30 pm on weekdays and 8 am, 10 am, 11:30 am, and 1pm on weekends.
