Goodan Ranch Sycamore Canyon Preserve near San Diego, CA

The Goodan Ranch / Sycamore Canyon County Preserve is a vast preserve that has coastal sage scrub and chaparral covered hills along with a mix of grasslands, riparian and oak woodland. There is a variety of plants in this 2,2272 acres preserve. With over 10 miles of trails you can hike or mountain bike to take in the grand vistas and variety of wildlife. The trail is steep and rocky in sections, and gentle and level in others. The total ascent is 1630 feet.

The Goodan Ranch / Sycamore Canyon County Preserve has two staging areas in which to enter. The first is the Goodan Ranch Staging Area which is located in Poway, California 24 miles Northwest of San Diego. The second is the Highway 67 Staging Area which is located in Lakeside, California also about 20 miles Northwest of San Diego. Pedestrian can enter the Preserver between sunrise and sunset, daily.

While hiking and enjoying the outdoors, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for remnants of the Kumeyaay Indians or pieces from when this area was a working ranch. If you have time, make sure you explore the visitor’s center that has bathrooms and water (in season) and a number of displays that relate to the history of the ranch as well as the wildlife in the area. If you are fortunate you will see the rattlesnakes they have in their terrariums.

Don’t forget to bring Fido with you to enjoy the great outdoors as this is a dog friendly preserve as long as they are leased.
