Built in 1828, the Providence Arcade (also known as the Westminster Arcade) was the first shopping mall built in the United States. It originally only had two floors, but a third floor of shopping space was soon added. The architecture of the establishment was inspired by shopping malls in Europe. It thrived until falling into some decline and decay in the 20th century. Much of this was just because it was old, but there were things that needed reconstruction because many aspects of the original construction were done quickly and inefficiently.
It is for this reason that the owners have closed and opened it several times in an attempt to improve it. The most successful of these was the most recent mall when the owners closed it from 2008 until 2013 for a much needed renovation and update. This renovation made it both a commercial and residential building. When visiting the very history-rich city of Providence, you definitely want to visit this beautiful and historic establishment. It such a valued historical piece that in 1971 it was included and the National Register of Historic Place and 1976 was declared a National Historic Landmark.
You will find it located in the heart of the downtown area of the city. The city and the establishment owners are continuing to improve this treasured national landmark so come back again.
