Eartha is located in Yarmouth, ME. It is an accurate three dimensional scale model of Earth and is the largest Rotating Globe in the World.
Eartha sits in the lobby of DeLorme, previously a map company but more recently it became a software company. Eartha was created in 1998 and measures forty one feet in diameter. Guinness awarded Eartha the world record for largest rotating globe in 1999, beating out prior record holder the Globe of Peace which only measures 33 feet in diameter. Eartha features full topography of the Earth including mountains and landforms. The giant globe sits in a three story atrium made of glass at DeLorme's company headquarters and gives visitors a glimpse of what Earth looks like when viewed from outer space.
Eartha was developed entirely using computer technology by David DeLorme, and was built by the employees of DeLorme. It took over a year just to collect the data to make the map. It is based on satellite imagery. The printed Eartha database is one of the largest in the world at around 140 gigabytes. The scale model of earth sits at a 23.5 degree tilted axis, exactly the same as Earth.
For those in the Yarmouth area, DeLorme is definitely worth a stop. The chance to view our plant as it is seen in space and to take in the beautiful colors and amazing detail of this magnificent record holding globe is sure to please any visitor.
