If you're looking to spend the long Memorial Day weekend in a historic US city, there is no better place than Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to get your fill of patriotism and summer fun. The best and biggest Memorial Day parade is held in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philly. The parade is a true local effort, with all floats and attractions being paid for via donations and support from residents. The parade features local brass bands, businesses and organizations, veterans and military groups, and Philadelphia city officials and local celebrities. The parade starts at Richmond and Allegheny Streets at 9AM, and is followed by food and live music in Campbell Square Park.

There are also numerous patriotic memorials in Philadelphia where you can pay your respects on Memorial Day. The beautifully landscaped Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located at Front and Spruce Streets, and just down the street is the Korean War Memorial, at Front and Dock. The memorial honoring "Colored Soldiers and Sailors" is on the west side of Logan Square, and the Civil War memorial is located on the north and south sides of the Ben Franklin Parkway across from the art museum. There are also numerous WWI and WWII memorials located around the city. The warm, sunny weather that usually accompanies Philadelphia in late May will hopefully bring some happiness to the somber memorials, and will allow visitors to enjoy some of Philadelphia's many museums, restaurants, and attractions.
