This is the World Famous Super Museum! Located in Metropolis, Illinois, right on the border with Kentucky, the museum is located in the "Official" hometown of the Man of Steel, right on Superman Square.
The Super Museum is often touted as one of the Best Small Town Attractions in the United States, has been featured in USA Today and the America the Beautiful Network as one of the top 50 places to visit in Illinois via the BLT.
The Super Museum is the result of a lifetime of collecting everything Superman by legendary collector Jim Hambrick. It features more than 20,000 items related to the Superman fandom; everything from toys to memorabilia from every incarnation of the Man of Steel - including the modern "Smallville" and "Man of Steel" productions. Of special interest is the fact that almost every single Superman toy ever made is on display, along with one of the last remaining Christopher Reeves-worn costumes. This is not a one-and-done kind of place, either. The displays rotate regularly, displaying new and different toys, costumes, and displays to encourage repeat visits.
Of additional interest to any lover of Superman is that the town of Metropolis holds an annual Superman Celebration every year in June. Other notable area attractions include the Major Elijah P. Curtis house, constructed in 1870, as well as the grave of Robert Stroud - better known as "The Birdman of Alcatraz."
To visit southern Illinois or western Kentucky and not stop at the Super Museum could be kryptonite to any family vacation. The museum has a very reasonable admission charge, and features a great gift and memorabilia shop. Couple that with all of the accolades the museum receives, and the Superman Celebration, and you'll have a super time at this destination!
