Historic Landmarks and Attractions
Old Fort Erie
Located across from the river, Fort Erie was the first British fort constructed after the French and Indian War. The fort now operates as a living museum where actors are dressed in period soldier uniforms and you can see live musket demonstrations. The original fort that served as a supply depot on this location sat along the water's edge but was later moved upwards to higher ground after damage from winter storms in the early 1800s.
This historic fort was the site of many historic battles from the War of 1812. The well-known, Major General Sir Isaac Brock served here under the British Army during the early stages of the war until he was later killed during battle. Today, the fort is used as a living-museum where you can take daily tours of the beautiful grounds, fire a musket, taste 19th-century style food, and even witness reenactment battles of the War of 1812 from over 200 years ago.
Chippawa Battlefield Park
Retrace the events of the Battle of Chippawa that was fought during the War of 1812. Taking place along the banks of the Niagara River, the battle was part of the campaign of 1814 which was one of the bloodiest and longest operations of the military during the war. The 300-acres of the park have been preserved of the battlefield and is one of the last remaining sites from the War of 1812.
Stretching across the border of the United States and Canada, the Rainbow Bridge is an arch bridge. The bridge was opened in 1941 after the previous bridge, known as the Honeymoon Bridge, collapsed a few years before due to an ice jam in the river. The bridge sits at 202 feet in height and spans over 960 feet across the river gorge. From here, as you cross you can see amazing views of the mighty rapids of Niagara Falls including American Falls and Horseshoe Falls.
