Hayden Planetarium in New York, NY

81 Central Park West New York, NY 10023
The original version of The Hayden Planetarium in New York, New York opened in 1935 and closed in 1997. However, it reopened three years later as a branch of the Rose Center of Earth and Space which is in turn a branch of the American Museum of Natural History. The museum is dedicated to researching and educating the public about space. It is centered and highlighted by its crown piece: The Space Theater. The theater depicts the beauties and complexities of the heavens via a stunningly narrated 3D show. Upon its the planetarium’s reopening in 2000, the museum began a tradition of having a celebrity voice the narration of the space show. The first celebrity to do so in 2000 was Tom Hanks. Since then, many other celebrities have taken on the role, among them the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, and Maya Angelou.

This show and all the museum, in fact, is not haphazardly thrown together by people who just want to entertain and make money. The staff is thoroughly dedicated to the very latest scientific research and exploration. In fact, the scientists on the staff are some of the very best in the field. These scientists and the exploratory team at The Hayden Planetarium have published in some of the top scientific journals. In addition, to further the drive toward public science education the museum also has many available books, public programs, and on-line resources. That being said, the entertainment aspect is world-class. A family vacation to New York City should always include a side trip to this amazing destination. Your kids are guaranteed to love it-as will you!
