If you want to go all out to celebrate New Year's Eve, New York City is the place to be. Everyone knows about the December 31 party in Times Square, with the crowds, celebrities, and infamous ball drop. If you want to do New Year's the traditional NYC way and head to Times Square, there are a few things you should know. First: make sure you show up early to get a good spot! Thousands of people converge on Times Square every New Year's Eve because it is a free party in one of the most exciting cities in the world. Secondly, dress warmly! New York can be bitterly cold, rainy, or snowy in the winter, so be prepared. And thirdly, have a sense of humor. It is likely that you will be standing up for a long time in a tightly packed crowd in freezing cold weather. Instead of complaining, enjoy the scene and the humanity around you. The ball drop at midnight and the excitement of it all will be worth it.

If the Times Square scene isn't for you, there are many other ways to spend New Year's in NYC. Most restaurants and bars have their own New Year's parties with varying themes and price ranges. For something a little different, you could celebrate New Year's Eve at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, which has a much more neighborhood feel than Times Square and features a spectacular fireworks show. For the adventurous, there is always the Central Park Midnight Run, a four-mile run in NYC's biggest park that commences at midnight after a non-alcoholic champagne toast. And if you want to celebrate in two boroughs, you can show up at the Brooklyn Bridge at 10:30 PM and register for the Brooklyn Bridge walk, where a crowd walks over the majestic Brooklyn Bridge at midnight to see the fireworks shows going on in all different parts of the city.
