New York City can be a great place to spend the long Labor Day weekend - September brings perfect Indian summer weather to NYC, and there are many celebrations and events going on where one can take advantage of the sunshine. New York holds a Labor Day parade every year that marches down Fifth Avenue and draws thousands of spectators. The parades feature local fire and police departments, as well as representatives from trade unions. Local politicians and high school bands participate in the parade as well. If you'd like an alternative to the regular parade, the Flatbush neighborhood in Brooklyn is home to the annual West Indian Carnavale, which celebrates Caribbean culture with music, song, dance, and street food and performance. The several-day event takes place over Labor Day weekend as well.

If you like electronic music, the annual Obscene NYC festival may be for you. Held every year on Randall's Island - just a 10-minute bus ride from Manhattan - the two-day open-air fest features performance by renowned electronic and house musicians and DJs. And if you just want to take in the weather during the Labor Day weekend and close out the summer the old-fashioned way, you can always have a picnic with family and friends in Central Park in Manhattan or Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
