Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar in New Orleans, LA
Located on that city's iconic Bourbon Street, the building is what remains of a property that was built in the 1720s, and was at one time owned by the infamous Lafitte family, headed by Jean Lafitte, entrepreneur and privateer. The establishment serves food and drink in surroundings that are invocative of an eighteenth century establishment.
Although originally built for use as a blacksmith's shop, the Blacksmith Shop Bar is believed to be the oldest establishment of its type in the United States. It is the oldest continuously-operated business on historic Bourbon Street. In addition to being a public tavern, the building was used as a 'station' on the Underground Railroad (there was a hiding area for fugitive slaves behind the building's fireplace) in the years before the Civil War. Because of its long presence on Bourbon Street, staff here are knowledgeable about the street in general, and what's worth seeing on it.
Jean Lafitte is credited for playing an important part in driving occupying British forces from the city during the War of 1812, by getting troops and supplies past the British upriver to General Andrew Jackson. It has been speculated that Lafitte used the shop as a meeting place to conduct illegal transactions so as not to interfere with his reputation as diplomat and legitimate businessman.
Today, the Blacksmith Shop Bar is well known for its signature drinks like the Hurricane. Situated in New Orleans' historic French Quarter, this establishment is located near other tourist destinations like the Canal Street Ferry and Latrobe Park where you can enjoy a variety of fun activities.
