Ashton Shepherd is a country singer/songwriter with strong Americana roots. Shepherd grew up in the small town of Leroy, Alabama and began her musical career at age five, when she began writing song lyrics in notebooks. When Shepherd was 8 she started performing in local talent competitions and small venues. With help from her parents, Shepherd even recorded an album independently when she was 15. Shepherd's mainstream country career took off in 2006 when she won the grand prize at a talent show: the opening slot at a Lorrie Morgan concert. While Ashton Shepherd was singing as the opening act for Morgan, she was seen by a representative of MCA Nashville Records. Shortly after, Shepherd was working on her first studio album.
Shepherd's debut single, “Takin' Off This Pain,” was released in September 2007. Later that same month, Ashton Shepherd made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage. “Takin' Off This Pain” and “Sounds So Good,” the title track from Shepherd's first album, both charted and became radio hits. Shepherd followed Sounds So Good with 2011's Where Country Grows, which contained her biggest hit yet, “Look It Up.” Shepherd took a nontraditional route while recording and touring – instead of relocating to Nashville, she stayed near her hometown in rural Alabama. When she's not touring, Shepherd is working on her farm or writing songs in her backyard cabin. Shepherd's lyrics contain rural imagery that reflects her life, and she writes sensitive songs about real life in blue collar towns, which has endeared her to country fans and critics alike. Her debut album received glowing praise from critics, and the Washington Post named Sounds So Good one of the best albums of 2008 in any genre.
