US Capitol Reflecting Pool in Washington DC
The US Capitol Reflecting Pool lies to the west of the US Capitol, and is the westernmost element of the Capitol grounds, and the easternmost element of the National Mall. The Captiol Dome and the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial are reflected in its waters.
The pool, completed in 1971, covers six acres, occupying more than half of the area known as Union Square. The plaza wherein it lies includes the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, a grassy, park-like area, The Capitol, US Botanic Garden, and the museums and galleries along the National Mall.
The broad, gently sloped limestone coping and the steps that lead down from ground level afford seating for visitors as they enjoy the reflections of the Capitol, the surrounding sights, and the sky as well as the ducks and seagulls that often swim in the pool.
