Fundraising began in April of 1926 and $200,000 was raised for ground to break on June 8 of the same year. The hotel was opened on New Year's Day of 1927. It was originally named the Community Hotel but was soon changed to its current name during a constest. It is listed on the U.S. Registrar of Historic Places. The hotel has been used as a radio broadcasting facility, for bootlegging, as a community watch tower, and gambling. There are also many underground tunnels leading to the hotel that served as illegal bases in the early 1900s. The hotel is also known for their many hauntings and ghost stories. It has been featured on 'Unsolved Mysteries' and has left people wondering about the guests that may be hanging around for many years.
