Spend a bit of time outdoors while in Chicago by visiting Starved Rock State Park.
This large park has many walking trails and plenty of room for children to run around and play. There are picnic tables that are ideal for enjoying a meal with family and friends, and a few grills to cook food.
While at Starved Rock State Park, you will see many beautiful rock formations created by rain and wind over the years. You can walk down a flight of stairs to reach the lower rock formations, which will give you a stunning view of the rocks above. The formations sometimes appear as cliffs that simply hang over an empty expanse, but if you stand on the ledges, you will see that there are more rocks, trees and foliage below. If you visit in the spring, you can see the waterfalls cascade over the formations. The hiking paths are marked, and there are places to sit if you want to rest or take a photo opportunity.
Visitors can spend the entire day getting lost among the beautiful formations and trails of Starved Rock State Park. There is a lodge in the area that offers a bit of history about how the cliffs formed. It sometimes has rooms available if you want to spend the night in the area as well.
