The Southern Area Public Library sits on the corner lot of Main Street and Church Circle in the quiet city of Lost Creek, WV.
Named the “Best Small Library in America” in 2013, the library offers unique services to the community. This hometown community of less than 500 residents provides neighboring communities access to library services and resources that wouldn't’t be available otherwise.
The library offers visitors a wide range of usual library services such as faxing, printing and copying services, public-use computers, and books for loan. It also brings some unique services to the community. The library becomes an after-school safe house for school age children, with the library providing an afternoon snack, while the children spend the afternoon studying or browsing the book shelves for their next reading adventure. Each month the library sponsors a different local charity, and encourages visitors to give back to the community through donations. The library also offers a variety of resources for students and job-seekers including resume writing, job application assistance, and filling out college and financial aid applications.
The Southern Area Public Library has found a way to not only provide much-needed services and resources to neighboring communities, but to help those less fortunate in the community. The Southern Area Public Library is truly an asset to the community.
