Charleston, South Carolina Seasonal Weather Information

 


The weather in Charleston, SC, is suited for most any type of traveler, from the history buff to the sports and recreation aficionado. With four distinct seasons, Charleston's weather is both delightful and surprising ' travelers who have packed their bags carefully stand to get the most out of their vacation to Charleston.

 


Summer in Charleston

 


During the summer, daytime highs are in the mid to upper 80s, while overnight lows are in the mid to upper 70s. While July is the warmest month of the year in Charleston, August is the wettest (with 6.5 inches of rain during the month). Summer travelers hoping to canoe, cycle, hunt, kayak and enjoy the beach will want to pack plenty of cool clothing, as well as some rain gear for summer showers. Edisto Beach State Park and Francis Marion National Forest are two nearby parks that offer great sports and nature opportunities.

 


Fall in Charleston

 


Summer days of heat and sun give way to a beautiful, mild autumn in Charleston. As daytime highs are in the upper 60s to lower 80s, and overnight lows are in the 50s through lower 70s, many consider fall to be the best time of year to visit Charleston. September is fairly wet, however, with 6 inches of rain for the month; however, by October, rainfall declines drastically, with half as much rain falling in October as in the previous month. November is the driest month of the year. Fall is a good time of year for golf, and also for embarking on the Low Country Ghost Tour. Visitors should bring an umbrella and rain resistant shoes, as well as short sleeved tops, pants and some long sleeved tops.

 


Winter in Charleston

 


As winter comes to Charleston, no one has to brace for foul weather, because even the coldest month, January, features daytime highs in the upper 50s! Overnight lows stay in the lower to mid 40s. Perhaps these warm temperatures are part of the reason that nearby Cape Romain National wildlife Refuge is one of the largest overwintering sites for American oystercatchers and marbled godwits, two popular species for birdwatchers.

 


Spring in Charleston

 


Spring time in Charleston is a great time of year for visiting all of the area's historic sites, such as Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, Charles Towne Landing State park, or the famous Ft. Sumter. With highs in the mid 60s to lower 80s, and overnight lows in the 50s and 60s, spring is perfect for maximizing your vacation time! Spring visitors will want to have both shorts and long pants, as well as some long sleeved and short-sleeved tops, plus a lightweight jacket.
