About Magnolia Plantation GardensThe gardens at Magnolia Plantation, open to the public since the 1870’s, attract tourists from around the world each year. The plantation was known for its beautiful gardens after John Drayton inherited the plantation in the 1840s and began developing the gardens. Some sections of the garden remain from its earliest days, which makes it the oldest unrestored garden in America. There is an amazing variety of flowers, with some in bloom year round, but springtime in the gardens is absolutely beautiful. The gardens include a tropical garden, cypress lake, maze, swamp garden, wildlife refuge, and so much more.
About Magnolia Plantation
The plantation has been owned by the Drayton family for over 15 generations and still remains to this day. The plantation itself dates back to 1676 and was originally used as a rice plantation. The home has an interesting past as It’s the only plantation house along the Ashley River to stand through both the Revolutionary and Civil War making it a fantastic place to learn about the history of the area and the United States.
