Gullah Ecotour from Edisto Beach
Located 75-minutes south of Charleston, Edisto Beach seems a world away where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Book your tour and meet us at Edisto Marina dock slip D 2 on Edisto Beach every Thursday at 10am and Noon (reservations required). Cast off into the salt marsh ecosystem of the ACE Basin with local guide, Sarah Burnell. Our 12 passenger, US Coast Guard inspected vessel provides a safe and intimate platform for Sarah's stories of 'Growing Up Gullah.' Your captain will share natural history information that influenced the Gullah way of life on Edisto.
Gullah is the only English based Creole language in the United States. It is a culture found along the coast of the southeastern US, but the music, food and art has a global reach. The ancestors of the Gullah people were brought here as enslaved workers from West Africa and their language, culture and food ways have survived on our Sea Islands. Sarah starts the tour as your guide, but will end the tour as your friend.
