Charleston Old Walled City Walking Tour Photos (7)

The Charleston Old Walled City Walking Tour is a fascinating way to learn about this history and culture of Charleston, South Carolina. You'll see some of the oldest and most historically significant locations within the Old Walled City while learning about its sordid and interesting past. Over the span of two hours, you will tour over one and a half miles of the historic Old Walled City.

Sights on the tour include:

  • Rainbow Row

    - The Rainbow Row is a series of 13 colorful historic houses located in Charleston. The homes were painted in pastel colors after they were restored in the 30s and 40s.
  • St. Michael's Church

    - Built in the late 1750s, the St. Michael's Church is known as one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the city of Charleston. The courtyard to the church features a small graveyard with the resting place of two historical people who signed the Constitution.
  • Pirate House

    - Built in the 1740s, the Pirate House was used as a double tenement home until 1928 when it was constructed as a single residence. During this time, the home received many rumors that pirates used to live here and used an underground tunnel to take them to their ships at the harbor undetected. The rumor has no evidence to back the claim but, the name has forever stuck to this day.
  • Dock Street Theater

    - Beautiful theater located in the historic French Quarter in downtown Charleston. The theater was built in 1809 as a hotel and in 1935 it was converted to the theater. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
  • High Battery

    - Known as a defensive fortified seawall at the tip of the Charleston peninsula, the battery was named after a coastal artillery battery during the Civil War that was located at the site.
  • Fort Sumter

    - Sea fort built in Charleston around 1829. During 1861, the battle of Fort Sumter took place here during the American Civil War. In 1863, the Union attempted to retake the fort but failed. The fort is now open for public tours by the National Park Service.
  • White Point Gardens

    - A 5-acre park located in the peninsula of Charleston. The area was originally a public bathing house in the 1840s and in 1881, it was removed to become the White Point Garden. The garden has many military relics around the site including guns that fired shells at Fort Sumter in 1863, French cannon from the Revolutionary War, and many more.
  • Pink House

    - This historic home was built around the early 1700s and is used as an art gallery in Charleston. It is known as the second oldest residence in the city of Charleston and one of the oldest buildings in the state of South Carolina.
  • Old Powder Magazine

    - This museum in Charleston was completed in 1713 and is the oldest public building in the city. The building was used as a gunpowder store during the American Revolutionary War. The museum has been operated since the early 1900s and was designated a Historic Landmark in '72.
