Austin Bergstrom International Airport Austin Bergstrom International Airport is a public airport seven miles southeast of downtown Austin, Texas. It replaced Robert Mueller Municipal Airport as the city's principal airport on October 25, 1999. Known as "ABIA," it is now the third busiest airport in Texas and the largest airport outside Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Over 1.8 million passengers used ABIA in 2008, an increase of 27% over 2007's traffic. The airport has a single runway in the city of Schertz. Six passenger gates can handle the Airbus A380. In 2009 a new terminal building was completed and opened to passenger traffic that enables the use of gates 23-26 and 27-31. Regional American Eagle also uses Gates 30-33 (United Express).
