On June 10th 2000 at approximately 10:45pm our life changed forever. Our then 19 year old son Shawn was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He spent much of the Summer of 2000 in the hospital and then in rehab. His recovery was slow, but he adjusted well to his new life style. The only thing that seems to keep Shawn down is a recurring respiratory problem. Whenever he gets a cold it seems to end up as pneumonia, which has put him in the hospital on several occasions.

On November 11th of 2005 we were called unexpectedly at work early in the morning from Shawn's caregiver telling us he was unresponsive and that she had called 911. As it turned out Shawn had a bad reaction to a new med that he had just started the day before and was put on life support in the ICU department. Shawn has spent the last 5 months in the hospital missing his birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and just recently Easter. Shawn was also engaged at the time he bacame ill, but unfortunately his fiancee could not handle the stress of his extended illness and has broken off the engagement. So he has been faced with another hurdle and heartache to over come. He is now in a very good rehab in Central Philadelphia and hopefully with their help he will be able to come home again in the near future.

I would like to be able to take Shawn on a small vacation when he is well enough so that our family can spend some quality time with him to let him know how glad we are that he is still here with us today. This has taken quite a toll on our whole family, mentally and financially. It would be a blessing for us. Thank you for letting us be a part of your contest!
