The museum is what remains of a school house from the early 19th century. The city of Silver Plume had a fire in 1893 which burned the school house to the ground. The city worked with William Quayle from Denver to build a new school, with a Romanesque feel and construction to it. The brick building is what is now the museum you can visit. The building was the school until 1959. Today, there are many artifacts and remnants of the 19th century school house to see. Many of the exhibits contain great items from this time period. Most of the museum tells of life in this era throughout the region. It depicts the beginning of the Silver Plume's existence as well. Visitors can walk into the classroom exhibit here.
Guests can tour the facilities as a guided tour if they live. You can also take a tour throughout the town by foot, including visiting the mines and outhouse used during this time. Visitors including school groups are welcome, but calling ahead is always beneficial.
