Major changes in the last year or so at Mountain Top Arboretum has made this great destination even more enjoyable. For thirty years, Mountain Top Arboretum has been a "living museum of trees and shrubs" that attracted hundreds every year.
Located on Route 23C near Tannersville, New York (near Windham) the site is half a mile above sea level in the rugged but beautiful scenery of the Catskill Mountains. New fencing, irrigation and an in-depth study of the problems of native birches have helped make the arboretum more attractive to visitors and locals. This educational and recreational site is perfect for a relaxing walk or a more studious time learning about the many flowers and trees. There are tours led by knowledgeable guides, giving the guest a great lesson in the field of horticulture. Lectures and other educational programs are presented on a regular basis.
Recent winters have shown that native fur-bearing animals regularly travel in and through the arboretum (tracks in the snow indicate fox, mink and coyote). The site is also used for guided bird walks and the popular annual Garden Fair at which visitors can purchase plants and horticulture-related books. Great concession choices are available for those who develop a slight hunger. Fall Bulb Day is also a popular annual event for those with interest in this fascinating niche of the plant and flower world.
Mountain Top Arboretum is a non-profit organization, with primary financial support coming from the public and from donations. Donations from visitors and arboretum enthusiasts are tax deductible for state and federal income taxes. More information about Mountain Top Arboretum is available by calling (518) 589-3903.
