Irish American Heritage Museum
Nicknamed the "melting pot," the United States is comprised of many different ethnic groups. While collectively the people create the American culture, each group attempts to preserve its own ethnic culture. The Irish began migrating to the United States in the late 1700s. There are now more than 30,000, 000 Irish Americans. The Irish American Heritage Museum in New York attempts to preserve the history of the Irish in America.
The Irish American Heritage Museum was founded in 1986 for the most part to collect and exhibit materials associated with contributions made by Irish Americans. The museum provides the information in the form of exhibits and lectures. While the exhibits may rotate, the museum offers a mainstay collection. "Home for the Heart" is an exhibit that chronicles the more than 100 years of the Irish in America. "American Presidents" is another exhibit in the permanent collection of the Irish American Heritage Museum. This exhibit presents biographical information about the U.S. Presidents who are of Irish heritage. In addition to these two exhibits, there are about six more exhibits that you can view at the museum at any time.
Educating Irish Americans is another significant purpose of the Irish American Heritage Museum. The museum sponsors a series of programs and offers them to the public in the summer. Theses educational programs take place in New York, Chicago, Wisconsin, New Orleans, Indiana, North Carolina, and Ireland.
People interested in making their own contribution to the Irish American Heritage Museum may consider becoming a member of the Irish American Heritage Museum. The fees associated with becoming a member contribute to the growth of the museum that is a total non-profit operation.
