Stonehouse covers more than 6,962 yards of hills and ravines. More than 2,500 acres is set aside for hiking and biking trails, and even has areas for fishing, canoeing, tennis, and swimming.
It has been said that in history, Captain John Smith created Stonehouse as a fort, and that it was used as a hideout. There are also stories that the barbarous pirate Blackbeard buried all of his treasures there.
