Construction on Williamsburg's Public Gaol (pronounced 'jail') was completed in 1704 and was ready for its two cells to be occupied. Today, visitors can tour and see the restored gaol where Revoluntary War spies, military prisoners, deserters and traitors were held.
Debtors, runaway slaves, and the mentally ill were also frequently held at the the public gaol. Convicts awaiting execution, branding or whipping could be found shackled in one of the crowded cells, as well as those awaiting trial. Some famous occupants included 15 of Blackbeard the pirate's henchmen, and Henry "Hair Buyer" Hamilton. One of the most intriguing and unique sites in Williamsburg, the public gaol is a must-see in the city!
