A state focal point, this beautiful walking place progresses through the Duke of Goucester Street to Palace Street and ends at the Governors Palace, passing various landmarks along the way.
Created as an emphasis on the executive power in the state of Virginia, the Palace Green also leads up to what was the center of the community. Passing the College of William and Mary, Bruton Parish Church, the George Wythe house, the James Geddy House, and the home of Elkanah Deane, Palace Green was also most likely used for public events and celebrations when first constructed in the early 1700s.
The large area of green offers a scenic walk, which flows into the avenues. Walking through the rows of catalpa trees, planted by Governor Gooch in 1737 to beautify the area, is a great way to enjoy Colonial Williamsburg and visit the many historic landmarks.
