Let your imagination run wild in the 1850's at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum in Surry, Virginia, located just a few miles south of Williamsburg.
Your whole family can enjoy seeing what life on a farm would have been like in the mid 19th century. Exhibits are displayed in a serious of farm houses and represent different stages of the farm life. You'll learn such interesting facts as how to build a farm home, preparing the soil for planting, then actually planting, cultivating, and of course, harvesting. The kids will love seeing the old farm tools that were actually used by craftsmen in the 1800's. Craftsmen exhibits include the blacksmith, the wheelwright, the cooper, and the cobbler.
Other displays include farm animals, processing, preserving, small tools, housewares, and much more. Many of the tools were actually hand forged by people of long ago, who fought and worked hard for everything they had. There are over 600 items on display, almost all of which were donated. Before you leave, be sure to visit the old saw mill, which was restored and installed as part of the museum's permanent collection.
