Bassett Hall in Colonial Williamsburg, VA
Explore Bassett Hall, the simple former home of notable people such as John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his wife Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and Burrell Bassett, nephew of Martha Washington. The house was built between 1753 and 1766. During the Civil War, the home brought together old friends from either side of the conflict as Union soldier George Armstrong Custer was a guest at Bassett Hall for 10 days while on leave to attend the wedding of a friend from West Point, Confederate soldier John W. Lea.
The home later belonged to the Rockefellers and remained a favorite residence of the couple, who owned it until 1979. The home is unique in that it offers not a glimpse at colonial America, but at the Rockefeller's 1930s and 1940s decor.
