Besides its picturesque landscapes and beautiful resorts and golf greens, Virginia Beach is also home to the Oceana Naval Air Station.
The Air Station, which is one of the Navy's four master jet bases, sees more than a quarter of a million takeoffs and launches through the year. To allow visitors to view the breathtaking sight of these magnificent warrior birds embark and alight from the Air Station, Oceana Boulevard is speckled with numerous observation parks, which are strategically located near the runway. The Naval Air Station boasts of 19 air squadrons which comprise of the legendary F 14 Tomcat Fighter Planes and the A-6 Intruder Medium Attack Bombers. If you're lucky, you can also spot the Super Hornet which is one of the Navy's latest acquisitions. Molded after the legendary single-seat F/A-18 Hornet, this aircraft has broken new ground in terms of its superiority of design which allows it aerial refueling, day and night precision. You can also visit the Aviation Historical Park, which is located inside the Main Gate on tomcat Boulevard for a closer look at the spectacular crafts, 13 of which are on display here.
You can even view the graceful acrobatic performances by the Blue Angels who are the US Navy's Flight Demonstration Squad at certain times during the year. All in all, regardless of whether it is your first time at Virginia Beach or one of many to follow, your visit is far from complete without an evening spent at the unique jet observation parks.
